I’m starting a candle company and need to know what type of wax to get for pillar and jar candles?

Wednesday, February 24th, 2010

I’ve tried working with para/soy wax, but it is so oily and does not hold color well or give a good scent throw. I am looking for a wax that can hold a "knock your socks off" fragrance. I am also looking for supplies, if anybody has any they are willing to sell, please let me know, I will pay a fair price.
I guess I prhased this question wrong. I need to know if anybody has used a wax that works well with pillar and container candles, or if I’m stuck buying 2 different blended waxes. Only serious answers please.

Try this website. It has some good ideas:

How much gel should I buy to make approx. 50 average sized candles?

Wednesday, February 24th, 2010

I have never made gel candles before but want to buy enough to make at least 50 medium sized gel candles. I noticed it is sold by the pound. Anyone with experience? What other materials will I need besides the obvious (zinc wicks, glass containers)?

What do you consider medium sized? If the candle cup hold about 1/2 cup volume then multiply that by 50 to get your amount, etc…

Where to buy 12 taper candles cheaply in northern CA or online?

I’m looking for white, ivory or tan candles.

Any party store sells tons of tapers in two sizes and all colors for reasonable prices.

Where is the cheapest place to buy bulk jar candles, pillar candles, and pillar glass vases? Any ideas?

I’m looking to buy hundreds of pillar type candles in various sizes. Any ideas where to find some good deals? Thanks!

Ikea or Ebay (search "restaurant supply candles" or "bulk pillar candles") have great deals…sometimes you can get lucky at craft stores like JoAnn’s or Michael’s when they have a sale. Compare prices at Froogle.com.

do you use scented candles or unscented candles when doing a ritual?

Wednesday, February 24th, 2010

does it matter whether it is scented or not?

Hello Captain Morgan

We use unscented. Always.

We use incense every meeting – a lot – so scented candles are pointless, plus most of them are artificial in their scent (i.e. not made with essential oils) so smell "wrong".

If outdoors even less need for scented candles. We may have a fire, or incense, or just the scent of the pine woods, the sea – wherever we are!

It is of course a matter of personal preference, but every coven I have ever visited uses unscented candles.

Now if you ask about incense, I am sure we can all come up with our favourites – mine I think is Kyphi – home made for preference, but some bought is good too. The Ancient Egyptians used to burn it before retiring at night, it is a lovely smell.

Anyone else love the smell as the charcoal blocks "take", as the saltpetre catches – it’s the smell of circle for me ;-p

How do i make my homemade soy candles smell?

Wednesday, February 24th, 2010

I followed all directions. used good soy wax chips and oil. But they dont throw off a strong smell. Not sure whats wrong. and my candles when poured and dried have holes in it. Help Please with any tips.

Even though you follow directions, these are only general directions. your equipment may be slightly different than that used be the ones who wrote the directions.
Temperature is very important over heating will "kill" the scent. Over or under heating can cause bubbles.
each batch you make, unless you weigh ingredients may be slightly different so a thermometer is extremely important.
As you gain experience, you will notice different methods and tips for a well done final product.
Scents usually lower the melting point.
Colorants usually raise it

How to remove the scent from scented candles?

Wednesday, February 24th, 2010

I looked high and low for the perfect wedding favor candles. Finally found them on an increadible sale, only to get home and find they smell like christmas trees. Does anyone know of a way to lessen or remove the smell from scented candles with out burning them?

Congratulations on getting married.

I’m glad you found the visually perfect wedding favor candles; I hope the fragrance isn’t so overpowering it makes them unusable for you.

I’ve been a professional candlemaker, and I’m sorry to have to tell you that there is no way to remove scent from a candle which has been scented. Whether the wax was scented with an essential oil or an artificial scent, the entire *batch* of wax had the scent added before your candle was poured or molded, so there is no way to remove it.

Anyone know where to get unique looking beeswax candles?

Wednesday, February 24th, 2010

I’m looking for the really nice stuff, but everywhere I look it’s the same old boring candles. My wife loves beeswax candles so I really want to impress her, but I can’t find anything nice enough.

If you want, take a look at these products and email and I can help you with something based on what she likes, as far as scents and colors. I can make you a centerpiece or something like that.
