how do you get a pillar candle to stick to a plate?

Thursday, July 22nd, 2010

i don’t have a candle holder for my pillar candles and i know there’s a way to get them to stay upright on a plate, but for the life of me i cannot find anything that tells me how.

I’m probably way off here but I cannot imagine why you would be having trouble getting pillar candles to stay upright. Those are the ones with the wide base, the ones for which you don’t need a holder.
Please, please, tell me you aren’t trying to make TAPERS stand upright without a holder!!!

Yes, you can make a taper stand up by dripping the wax and it can look really cool but they require constant supervision and can be dangerous. The wax starts to get soft and they will fall.
For tapers use a shot glass or a blueberry tin or a even a bowl, scrunch up a bunch of aluminum foil inside to hold it properly.

I have a couple of old yankee candles that the wick is gone but wax is still left.?

I don’t want to throw them away. There is probably enough wax in these jars to make at least 3-4 votive candles If I wanted to melt this down and use a candle mold to reshape it and add a new wick what would be the best way to do this? Specifically heating/melting the wax.

Use an electric candle warmer. Buy them at dollar stores, etc., set your jar on it, turn it on, and enjoy the fragrance. Some of the candle warmers actually soften the wax enough to get it out, too.

Episode 6 of James Burke’s most well-known series “Connections” which explores the surprising and unexpected ways that our modern technological world came into existence. Each episode investigates the background of usually one particular modern invention and how it came into being. These explorations are an attempt to locate the “connections” between various historical figures who seemingly had nothing to do with each other in their own times, however once connected, these same figures combined to produce some of the most profound impacts on our modern day world; in a “1+1=3″ type of way.

It is this type of investigation that is the core idea behind the Knowledge Web project, whereby sophisticated software is being developed to attempt to discover these subtle interconnections automatically. See http://k-web.org.

Votive Candle Making Part 4

Wednesday, July 21st, 2010

This is Part 4 of an introduction to how I make votive candles in my house. I realize that other people do things differently, but this is the way I do it. The purpose of a candle is to be lit and burned, so they do not need to be perfect, most people don’t care. So I’m sort of a sloppy, candle maker. Anyway, enjoy and I truly hope you learn something, or want to learn more, if you do, leave a comment.

Oh yeah, this is totally unscripted I ad-lib all the time. So enjoy. Thanks.
