How can I make my own candles out of Beeswax?

And is there a special type of smoke used to lull the bees or will any smoke do?

Thanks!
M:
ROFL! My local wal-mart sells Hemp clothing…
Candles are used in religions :)

I use slightly moist pine wood chips in a bee smoker because they put off large quantities of smoke very quickly and are readily available in my area…. Other good fuels pine needles and tree bark..

Smoking the bees caused them to load up on honey and leave the hive in a docile fashion.. Smoke the hive for at least 3-5 minutes to get the largest number of bees in flight away from the hive as possible…

Once the smoking is done quickly open the hive, remover honey combs in a domestic hive remove all but 1 comb board in a wild hive remove no more than 60% of the comb.. Leaving a portion of the comb will entice the bees to return to the same place to restart their hive rather than migrating to a new location…

If the bees begin returning while you remove comb you can re-smoke the area but work quickly the longer the bees are away the less likely they are to reestablish in the same spot.. You don’t want to be working on the same hive longer than 15-20 minutes if at all possible…

Take the comb to a centrifuge spinner (It’s basically a round container with a spinning cage of mesh in the middle to hold the comb, they come in hand crank and electric varieties) Using a hot knife to gently open one side of the comb exposing the individual honey cells.. Slide the comb into the mesh cage and spin the honey out leaving the wax comb… Rinse combs in cool water to remove small portion of remaining honey..

There are three methods of making candles..

1. Melt and mold…

Just as it sounds you melt the wax comb into a liquid over a low heat and pour into mold with prepositioned wick..

2.. Dipping..

Melt the wax over low heat and gently dip wicks in and pull them out slowly building up layers of wax on the wicks..

3.. Wrapping…

Using a very low heat soften comb until it’s pliable (I use an electric clothes iron placing the comb on a flat work bench with a sheet of parchment under and over it to prevent sticking to the iron of the work bench, gently iron for a few moments until comb is pliable do not press down just run the iron over the comb, no steam…) When the comb is pliable place a wick at one edge and roll the wax aroung it until it reaches the desired look and/or size..

There are molds to make more uniform comb sheets using the melt and mold method that can later be used for wrapping..

Now you know just about all I know about beeswax candle making.. :)

Remember if you get stung do not pull the stinger out by trying to pinch it and pull as there is a small venom sac attached to the stinger and pinching it will inject the venom remaining in the sac into you… Instead gently scrape it out using a finger nail, credit card or other item… Immediatly treat the area with a coating of mud to help draw out some of the venom and help the string heal faster…

Murray’s Beeswax Experiment

Thursday, May 20th, 2010

Like a lot of others who saw Dave Canterbury’s “A Common Man’s Grease lamp” video, I saw a lot of potential with this stuff.

Now, to be sure, a simple wick would afford the longest burn time…even compared to all of the candles tested in this video. And a normal tealight candle easily burns for hours. However, what I wanted to make and test was a number of recycled tealight candles that could be started with a simple spark.

Thank you Dave for the inspiration. And good luck with the Discovery Channel!

Is there such a thing as NATURALLY scented candles?

Monday, May 17th, 2010

I am looking for candles that are made with natural scents, like lavender oil, etc, that are not scented artificially. I know that soy and beeswax candles are natural pertaining to the wax portion, but I am hoping to find some candles that are also scented naturally. Does anyone have any suggestions?

a fun project for you would be to make your own natural smelling candels – fun to make and you get to pick which "natural" things and sents go in it

Beeswax in candle making section suitable for lip balms?

Tuesday, May 11th, 2010

I went around looking for beeswax yesterday (for a lip balm I wanted to make) and could only find some in the candle making section of a craft store. Is this beeswax suitable for making lip balm, or any other body products?

The links below are to sites with recipes for using candle stubs to make lip balm! Yes, as long as it’s plain beeswax with no chemical additives, it’s the same stuff. If you’re concerned and you have a natural or whole-foods store near you, they often carry beeswax. Of course, there are many places on the net to buy it, too.

Catholic people… how do I get beeswax candles real cheap?

Sunday, May 9th, 2010

Search Yahoo for "beeswax candles", and expect to pay triple the cost of paraffin candles.

A pure beeswax 16" tapered candle on one site I found was almost $5.00 apiece. Most candles used in Catholic Churches are not pure beeswax, or even part beeswax. Most of them are paraffin, which is a lot less expensive.

If you don’t need pure beeswax candles, don’t use them. They burn a lot hotter than paraffin, and they will burn you badly if you spill the wax on your fingers. The spilled hot beeswax will damage many wood finishes that would not be harmed by hot wax from a paraffin candle. Because pure beeswax melts at a higher temperature than paraffin, a pure beeswax candle usually will have less liquid wax near the flame, since the pure beeswax will melt only very close to the flame. Some people think a pure beeswax tapered candle will not drip at all, but that is not always the case. They drip less than paraffin, but they still can drip.

If you really want beeswax, make sure you don’t get ripped off. Don’t pay extra unless it is 100% beeswax. If it doesn’t say 100%, it isn’t 100%.

Pure, raw beeswax candles do have a distinct aroma. They smell slightly sweet because they usually have a small amount of hive "trash" mixed in – a tiny amount of honey and tiny specs of bee wings or bodies. That is only the case for pure 100% raw beeswax candles.

If you are looking for these candles for Catholic ceremonial or ritual purposes, please talk with a Catholic priest to be sure you are not planning to do something that is improper, or frankly illicit. If you need a single small blessed candle for a legitimate purpose, a priest might be able to give you a candle. Whether or not you are Catholic, please treat any blessed object, candles or other things, with proper respect. If you are not sure about something you are thinking of doing with a blessed object, please ask a priest.

I am Roman Catholic.
Peace be with you.
