can you make candles of your likeing by melting down other candles (more inside)?

Sunday, May 2nd, 2010

like if you have a whole box full of unscented candles, can you make other candles by melting them down?
I know they sell that wax stuff or whatever it is at hobby lobby and other craft stores that you make candles out of.
But can you do the same thing by shaving the candle wax of other candles down?

I take all the candle stubs and remelt them to make new candles all the time. Sometimes I add new wax, sometimes not.

You will need a double boiler, thermometer, new wicks and the molds to make your candles.

Double boiler, not microwave!! Put water in the bottom wax in the top. Use candy thermometer to make sure you aren’t getting your wax too hot or too cool. Molds can be made of anything. Cup cones, paper cups, milk cartons with ice. Lots of things. Or you can purchase them.

I want to make an unscented candle that I can add essential oil to as it burns. Any ideas?

Once the entire top of the candle is liquid you can add a few drops. Remember essential oils are oil and thus flamable. This works better if it is a candle in a jar or a pillar rather than a taper.

Are scented candles ok in centerpieces?

Wednesday, April 28th, 2010

I was figuring on putting a big red pillar candle inside a large hurricane glass for some centerpieces, but I can’t seem to find pillar candles that aren’t scented!!! Are scented ones ok? There would only be 4 or 5 in the whole room (about 75 people). Or does anyone know where I can find unscented red candles? I’ve tried Walmart, Target, Michael’s, Sears, …

Scented candles are fine, especially with so few in such a large room. I don’t know your budget but here’s one for $5 that is unscented:

You could always make your own too. You can buy a wax kit at a craft store for $15-20 and you can pick up some coloring along with it for $2-3. That will be plenty to make 4 or 5 large pillar candles. You’ll just need a mold to put them in to dry.

Good luck!

EDIT: Theologygirl has a good point that I didn’t really think about. You should probably shoot for the unscented if possible. If you can buy the ones at the site I listed above, you should be fine. If these aren’t what you’re looking for, please let me know.

Which candles burn faster; colored, noncolored, scented or unscented?

Saturday, April 24th, 2010

Its nothin to do with the colour or scent, its to do with the thickness of the wick.

I need to buy bulk unscented white votive or tea light candles in Manhattan. Where should I go?

Thursday, April 22nd, 2010

IKEA $3.99 for 100 tea lights. I’m having a wedding, and need a lot of candles, IKEA’s the first place I went- I’ve used these before just around the house and they’re good and unscented.

What burns faster a scented or unscented candle?

Friday, April 16th, 2010

Mostly about the same in my experience but a heavily scented candle will burn quicker than normal
