The Sky is the Limit: Candle Making Ideas

There are many candle making ideas in books, online and in magazines. The variations on the different types of candles are almost limitless. Depending on the type of candle being made, there are different options to play with, from shape, color, fragrance or design.

Shape

Different types of candles inherently have different shapes. When looking for great candle making ideas, the first place to start is in the type of candle. Votive candles are small candles, so they do not provide as many options in design or color patterns. They are great candles to do in brilliant colors and also to experiment with different fragrances. There can also be some shape experiments too, but that moves more into the pillar type of candle.

Pillar candles

Pillar candles are the most viable option for experimenting with new candle making ideas since they tend to be larger. Pillar candles can be made in any shape that you can make a candle making mold to hold it. They can also be any size, so the options are limitless. Since there is more surface area, there can also be different colors and designs within a single candle.

Color

There are many different candle dyes and charts that can assist a candle maker with candle making ideas. With the development of gel wax, there is also the option of placing figures, colors and patterns within a clear wax so that they can be seen ‘floating’ within the candle. Crayons are also a fun option to explore in creating colored candles, and it also gets rid of those little bits of crayons that everyone hate to throw away, yet are not seemly useful for anything. Now they are!

match the color of the candle to the season

Another candle making idea is to match the color of the candle to the season of the year or the person to whom it is being given. Bright red and green might work at Christmas, whereas a more subdued copper and golden yellow is more appropriate in the fall. Springtime may evoke some pastel colors and winter the more earthy hues.

Fragrance

There are also many fragrances to choose from when coming up with candle making ideas. A candle maker can stay as simple as using the vanilla that she has on her kitchen shelf, to buying specific fragrances such as blueberry or strawberry to spice up her candles’ scents. Scents can also be matched to seasons of the year, such as ocean spray for summertime or pumpkin pie for fall.

How To Make A Candle

Friday, April 16th, 2010

So here it is..see how I did. How to Make Pillar Candles. I made some mistakes, but easily fixed. If candle is wrong shade, just melt and add more dye…(my red candle originally turned out a beautiful pink). Make a candle the color you want. I got my supplies at a local national chain craft store (Michael’s), and my pillar candles at Kmart, but you can buy these at Mexican Grocer stores as well.

How-to: Realistic Electric Flickering Pillar Candles

Wednesday, February 24th, 2010

Touring The Darkness haunt in St. Louis I came across super-realistic pillar candles that are electric so no need to change batteries. Unfortunately, the manufacturer (Enjoy Lighting) doesn’t make the pillar version any longer. That started my search to see what else was out there.

In the search, I discovered that Enjoy Lighting (Enchanted Lighting) still has the 3 incandescent grain bulb circuit array that I loved in their Outdoor Lanterns. So, I grabbed a set and hacked them into pillar candles. Success! Here’s my how-to.
